She Put a Spell on Me!! Halloween card
With a background twist…
Silvia Spider Web and her bubbling cauldron of magic potion cast a spell on me…
It was a spell or some other mystical phenomenon that had me decide I would create my own background!!
That’s right, no digital scene builder helpers, just a girl with a fine line marker and a scene in her imagination…
And… I absolutely amazed myself.
As we all know, I can create a beautiful card layout, coordinate background papers and colors, fold paper in intricate ways in order to come up with a highly entertaining fun fold card, color adorable images, however I have no skills when it comes to drawing an image or sketching an image myself. Like… a stick man is a challenge for me!!
I have, on occasion when creating a scene card had to draw in a part of a tree, or create the illusion of floor meeting wall, a counter top or shelf, however the background for this card was totally new to me.
It’s just paper and ink! So I thought - why not give it a try! If it’s a complete fail, I’ll throw in in the garbage can and no one ever knows… you know like when you burn a pan of cookies! :)
So I downloaded the Sylvia Spider Web Witch image into Adobe Express as well as the image of the cauldron, and got those situated how I wanted them to appear on the card front. Printed it and grabbed a pencil.
I started with an arch shape in the background as I knew I wanted a window. Slowly and with a very cautious hand I started to sketch in some blocks that would form the window casing. I had to remember it was a pencil I had in my hand - erasers are made for mistakes!
When I had what would suffice as a window for this tower of sorts that this witch was going to live in, or at least perform her spells in, I traced over the pencil lines with a black fine line marker and erased any signs of the pencil. Poof! There is a little magic in me…
Ok.. so I have a window! I am now going to need a corner type thing and walls and such to depict that this is a room where Sylvia is conjuring up potions and casting spells in.
Again, my pencil was my partner in crime here while I sketched in a make shift corner, separation between floor and wall, and some fun little cracks in the interior of the walls to add to the creepiness of the scene.
When the scene looked somewhat balanced though not perfect… it was good enough for me. I traced the lines with the fine liner pen and moved on to coloring this fun little scene where Sylvia could continue with her witchery! Maybe she’ll turn me into an artist!
The card front was completed using Copic Markers for coloring and blending out the shadows where the floor would meet the wall.
I added a bit of a night time scene outside the window with a die cut moon colored to coordinate with the spider webbing and some gel pen stars ( indeed the stars could use a little artistic talent ).
The potion in the bubbling cauldron was highlighted with some sparkly green Stickles, and some gel pen highlights were added to finish off this card front before attaching to a background of black cardstock in a slightly different layout just to add to the whimsical Halloween vibe of this card. The card panel was then attached to a top folding card base.
The image is from Sweet November Stamps - Spider Web Silvia, as is the “It’s Halloween, Witches” sentiment.
A simply Spook-tacular card to “wow” your friends & family with this Halloween season!
Just a reminder: move out of that comfort zone when creating your cards! Try something new -even if it’s scary!! It’s just paper!! Besides you may surprise yourself… I did!
