Michaels Store Refresh + A Large Tag
What craft store do you go to when you need to grab something quick to craft with?
Let’s say your black ink pad had run dry and you need to rush out and pick some up, or you want to make a nice spring project but suddenly realized you have no pastel pattern paper. You don’t have time to wait for an online order. Where do you scramble to purchase crafting items you need ASAP?
The other day, I needed another Tim Holtz storage can to store my ink pads. “Needed”- I use that term very loosely… hahaha!
Here’s what it actually was - I have needed/wanted another storage tin for my oxide inks and I had a 40% off coupon that was going to expire. So I decided it was a good time to grab that tin so I could get the discount on it. I usually purchase something like that when there will be a nice savings on it.
To purchase anything “crafty”, I have to make the 45 minute drive into the city. This area absolutely has nothing crafty happening in it as far as the sale of maker items. In fact the only thing I can buy local to me is liquor or pizza. Really, that’s it, no joke.
The towns that are a little farther away without having to go in to the city as well have absolutely no craft items.
Needless to say when I am feeling creative, I do have to rely on online purchases or venture the scenic drive to Michaels. Obviously Michaels doesn’t have everything I would want, however it’s a great crutch for basic crafting needs.
To my surprise, the day I landed at Michaels the store had just done a refresh. Now I don’t think I have seen one of those in the last 5-7 years, so that was, for me, super exciting!
The above *New products were just a few in the explosion of new and exciting things in the papercraft section of the store. The dies had been completely refreshed and some super cool dies including celestial, mushrooms, florals and many more now hang there. The nesting dies had been restocked and now included many shapes and sizes. Frame dies had been added to the collection, as well as some really nice tag and banner die sets. Layering stencils were a fresh new item that looked fabulous to the crafters eye, as well as much needed new stamp sets.
I did notice in the papercraft section that Memory Keepers products seemed to be gone and replaced with similar versions of Reflections items.
The Paper packs still left very little to be desired (at least at my store).
Copic Markers were 2 for $7, which is a great price - however these are the same color selections that have been offered for the last 5 years. Maybe they are trying to clear those colors out so they can do a refresh of the Copic Marker cabinet. Here’s hoping! I haven’t been able to buy a N1 Copic Marker there in 4 years.
These were the only sections of the store that I checked out that day despite the fact that I also dabble in yarn, paint, cricut and beads. I look forward to a closer look on another day!
So… I did pick up my ink pad storage tin, as well as a few tag dies that I just couldn’t resist. Which brings us to today’s project - a large tag!
I created this tag to complete a notebook/journal that I had created. The colors of the notebook were very neutral and though I loved the overall outlook of the book it just needed something with a pop of color.
A large tag die, some gorgeous paper from 49 & Market (their paper is an amazing quality for tags and always beautiful), a little ink and a die cut butterfly and I had a gorgeous tag that was just perfect to add to the journal book with the missing pop of color. ( You’ll see that book in the next few days).
The paper is fabulous and basically takes care of the beautiful end of things on this tag. I added a little stamping in random areas, and stenciled on some brick with texture paste. A touch of Peacock Feathers distress spray, a little scrap of some webbed ribbon material under the die cut butterfly. I used a little Black Soot ink on the edges of the butterfly.
